Critical Reflection

 1. How do your products represent social groups or issues?

My product represents social groups and issues with the whole premise of the short film. In the short film, the main character is currently living without a mother, who passed away. Around the world, thousands of kids each day are left without a parent. As a result, Many without a parent are often disconnected and feel like they're missing an important part of their life. In this movie, my partner and I wanted to show what it's like to finally reconnect with a lost parent. It might not be what the main character would've wanted, but it allows them to see what his mother cared about. With this social issue being shown, it allows the audience to "live" in the main character's shoes. It's shown at some parts in the movie that the main character really misses his mother and he's trying to succeed for her. When the main character finally figures out his mother's lost treasure he is seen crying. This shows the struggle to move on from losing a loved one. Another social issue that was touched on was single parenting as a father. In most movies, it is usually shown that the father leaves or passes away but we wanted to show the other side of parenting. It represents all the single fathers around the world who are struck by tragedy.

2. How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?

The elements of our short film's production work together to create a sense of branding because of the various amounts of marketing. In our marketing campaign, we wanted to create a new sense of branding. My partner and I did not want to make a basic type of advertisement, we wanted our marketing to be different and I feel like that created our branding. When creating our social media accounts we wanted to create a sense of formality, but at the same time, we wanted a sense of mystery. That fit our short film perfectly. With our website, we wanted to go with a minimalistic look. This created a sense of feel that this movie would be a calm one, (which it was) and it also created the branding of a calm movie. Another thing that enhanced our branding was the postcard. With a similar concept of the website, we wanted the postcard to complement the short film in branding. I feel like the postcard depicted the calm tone well too. The light colors and calm font allowed for a "chill" sense of feeling. Another thing that enhanced our branding was within the short film itself. I feel like the way my partner and I direct our films create a branding of our own. The way we take shots, use lighting to our advantage, and the storytelling our films do creates our own flavor; And I feel like in this short film our flavor and branding are the best represented.

3. How do your products engage with the audience?

My short film engages with audiences very well. Since the film is fairly short it was easy to keep the audiences engaged in that short amount of time. The way we were able to keep the audience engaged throughout the movie is with the pacing. Pacing is the rate of movement in a film. Without proper pacing, any film can affect audiences negatively. In our short film we were able to use the length of the film and pacing to our advantage. We didn't want the pacing to be too fast because it was only a 5 minute film but, we didn't want the pacing to be too slow because it would drag out our short film and we would run out of time. My partner and I ended up finding the perfect pacing. One which the viewer wouldn't be bored at all and could follow the plot happily. Another way my short film is able to engage with the audience is because of the plot. Since my partner and I wanted the veiewrs to be engaged during the whole duration of the movie we also needed a good plot. With that being said, me and my partner spent hours trying to come up with the best screenplay we could've. We added suspense, mystery and adventure all in one short film. The plot we ended up choosing allowed us to perfectly pace our movie while having a fairly simple plot. With all of those aspects my groups short film can engage with auidences.

4. How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?

We used our research to create our short film and challenge conventions in many ways. To make our short film the best it can possibly be, my partner and I decided to do extensive research on other short films. We ended up using youtube to research and watch other short films. This allowed us to have a reference on how our short film should turn out. After focusing on short films as a whole my partner and I wanted to dive into our genre. The genre we chose was an adventure/mystery type and we really thought we can do a spin on those movies. My partner and I wanted to focus more on the old simple movies like the Goonies instead of going for a more action packed adventure movie like Jumanji. My partner and I wanted to challenge conventions by going away from the status quo. All the movies are fast paced and confusing and I wanted to do something different. So we created a calm version of an adnture movie with some aspects of a mystery in it. Challenging conventions allowed for my short film to stand out and I'm very satisfied with the way it was turned out.

Final revisions and publishing.

Hey, blog! In this blog, I will be talking about the final revisions my partner and I made for our short movie. We mostly proofread everything to see if we did anything wrong, re-editing and publishing all of our work. We decided to FaceTime to do the work because it would be easier and it later helped out later on. The first thing we did was proofreading. We checked our website to make sure there were no errors on the pages and it mostly came out alright. We only just changed the home picture becuase it was a stock photo. The next thing we did was re-edit the movie. When we were rewatching our short film we noticed something. Two shots were out of order. Even though we were shocked, we went to fix that right away. I launched HitFilm, opened the saved file, and changed the error. The next thing we did was publish the movie. We checked the film over again one more time to make sure there wasn't any errors, then submitted. While processing the film something went wrong. My Wifi went off and it lost connection to youtube. I told my partner over facetime and he was able to help me fix everything. Once my Wifi went back up I was able to submit the project and we were happy. The last thing we have to do is the CR and we are done with the short film project.

Creating our postcard

Hi, blog! In this blog, I will be explaining the process that my partner and I went through to create the postcard. However, the first thing that we did was split the workload. Before deciding this my partner and I started a call on the communication service "Discord". We started streaming our screens and got ready to work. After some discussion, my partner and I decided that I would do most of the postcard and he'd focus on creating a new logo for our movie. When creating the new logo for the movie we needed a photo editing software. None of us had photoshop, so we decided to use a website called Photopea. It mimics all of the functions of photoshop and works perfectly for our needs. We decided to put a gradient background to represent sunshine, and we used a specific font to be bold and adventurous. To create the postcard we used a website called Canva. It is an editing software that allows you to create various things such as posters and postcards. They offer various different templates for your specific needs. We ended up using a Canada travel template. It was calm, nice, and effective for our needs. We added our title, social media, and film release dates to it. We also chose two photos that best fit the feel of our movie. Another thing we added was a QR code that takes you to our website. When we finished with the postcard, we looked it over to see if it was good, and we were satisfied.

Wrapping up the short film

Hi, blog! This is the last blog of December! In this blog, I will be looking back on my journey of the short film and reflecting on what we did. This process wasn't easy. But it was fun. It was a lot of work but we managed to get it done. Since last year I've grown as a filmmaker in many ways and I'm happy about that. My partner and I were able to create a short 5-minute film to our liking! Reflecting on everything, there was a lot of hard parts. The planning phase and the editing was the hardest for me. The planning was hard because we had no idea what we wanted to do. I'm glad we were able to settle and be able to make a great short film. The editing phase was hard for me because of the constant technical problems. Being worried about whether your computer was going to run into problems was very stressful. However, I'm glad it only happened once because we were able to get it fixed and finish our film. The hard parts of creating the short film did make it very stressful but the easy parts also made it fun. The easy and fun part of the film creation was the filming itself. Directing and being an actor was fun and I'm glad we were able to bring our idea to life. Looking back I'm happy with what my partner and I created. In my opinion, I think the short film is good and I'm glad we made it.

Finishing up the editing

Hi, blog! In this blog, I will be talking about how my partner and I finished up editing our short film. This didn't take too long but it was eventful. After the trouble we went through last time we tried to edit we had to get it done now. First, we had to recover everything we lost the day before. We imported all of the files again and started editing. While doing that I noticed that we were missing a scene. This scene was the beginning of me in the closet. My partner and I just decided to leave it out and work around it and that ended up working for us. A problem that we ran into while editing was the time. Our film was severely over the limit. 2minutes and 30 seconds to be exact. We had about 7:30 worth of film and we needed it to be at 5 minutes. As a result, we had to cut all of the shots we didn't need. After that, our video software stopped working. My partner and I didn't know what to do because we wanted to see each other's screen but we met a compromise. We ended up using Facetime for iPhone. After that, we were able to finish editing. We ended up making the video around the time limit.

Errors we ran through while editing

Hey, blog! In this blog, I will be talking about the problems my partner and I ran through while editing. Everything was going well for about 25 minutes. I was cutting all the shots, moving them to the timeline, and editing the movie. Then everything went bad from there. My computer started glitching and there was nothing I could do about it. While I was editing pixels started to randomly pop up on my screen. It got to the point where I couldn't see the video I was editing and I just had to wait. Then even more things started happening. My wifi went out. So that meant that my call with my partner dropped and I couldn't talk to him over discord. I had to go on my phone and facetime him to tell him what happened. So after that, I tried to troubleshoot the wifi problem on my computer and even more went worse. My computer froze. That meant we lost everything and we had everything gone. I tried to restart my computer but it wouldn't work. I ended up getting very upset and I had to take a break. My partner and I decided to just wait until the next day to start editing again and to let the computer have some time. We lost a lot of time, but we ended up getting some of the work back.
